Learning

Health & Safety Policy

ATC wants learning to take place in environments that protect learners, staff, service users, employers and visitors. Everyone has a responsibility to act safely, follow instructions, report hazards and work within their competence. This policy supports, but does not replace, the employer or placement provider’s own health and safety arrangements.

Website draft — legal and operational review required.

Purpose and scope

Purpose

Support safe learning and practical activity for learners, staff, service users, employers, placement partners and visitors.

Scope

Classroom, workplace, placement, practical, online and blended learning under ATC direction, alongside local employer or venue arrangements.

Responsibilities

ATC

Give relevant instructions, identify foreseeable risks within its control, support reporting and review incidents.

Learners

Take reasonable care, follow instructions, work within competence, use equipment correctly and report hazards or incidents.

Employer or placement provider

Control its premises, local procedures, equipment, supervision, infection prevention and emergency arrangements.

How the policy works

  1. Complete the relevant induction and follow the host organisation's risk controls, PPE, infection prevention, manual handling and emergency procedures.

  2. Stop and report an unsafe task, hazard, near miss, injury or change in ability to the local contact and ATC as soon as possible.

  3. In an emergency, make the area safe if possible, contact emergency services and follow the local emergency plan.

  4. ATC will review the learning impact and consider welfare, safeguarding, adjustment, special consideration or complaint routes as appropriate.

Workplace and placement learning

Follow the host employer’s induction, risk controls, infection prevention, manual handling, personal protective equipment, incident reporting and emergency procedures. Do not carry out a task without appropriate training, supervision or authorisation. Tell both the employer or placement contact and ATC about an incident, near miss, unsafe instruction or change in ability to work safely.

Classroom and practical activity

Attend inductions, use equipment as instructed, keep walkways clear, follow fire and evacuation arrangements, report defects and use protective equipment where required. Practical demonstrations must be supervised at the level appropriate to the task. Learners should disclose a relevant support need so that a safe reasonable adjustment can be considered.

Online learning

Choose a safe workstation, take breaks, manage cables and screens, avoid driving or carrying out hazardous tasks during live learning, and protect confidential information. Report online abuse, distress, unsafe content or a serious technology issue under the relevant policy. Remote assessment arrangements must protect people and assessment integrity.

Responsibilities

ATC will provide clear instructions, identify foreseeable risks within its control, support reporting and review incidents. Learners must take reasonable care of themselves and others, follow lawful instructions, use equipment correctly and not attend or participate when impairment creates a safety risk. Employers and placement providers retain responsibility for their premises and local procedures.

Incidents and emergencies

In an emergency, make the area safe if you can, call the appropriate emergency service and follow the host organisation’s procedure. Report the event to ATC as soon as possible. ATC may pause an activity, arrange welfare support, apply special consideration or refer a safeguarding concern.

Ask your tutor before undertaking an unfamiliar task. Use the Safeguarding Policy for abuse or risk of harm, the Learner Welfare Policy for wellbeing support, the Reasonable Adjustments Policy for access needs and the Complaints Policy for a concern about how ATC managed safety.
